The Best Beaches In Byron Bay

15 February 2024

Byron Bay beach

Byron Bay is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in Australia. From the bustling Main Beach to the serene Wategos, here are the best beaches in Byron Bay.

Main Beach

Main Beach is the heart of Byron Bay — a wide, golden stretch of sand that runs from the town centre to The Pass. It's the most popular beach in town, with patrolled swimming areas, gentle waves for beginners and a vibrant atmosphere. The Byron Bay Surf Life Saving Club sits at the southern end, and the beach is within easy walking distance of the shops, cafes and Hotel Marvell.

Wategos Beach

Wategos Beach is arguably Byron Bay's most beautiful beach. Nestled beneath the Cape Byron headland, it offers crystal-clear water, white sand and stunning views of the lighthouse. The beach is sheltered from the wind, making it calm and perfect for swimming. It's also a popular spot for surfers, with a gentle right-hand break at the eastern end. Raes on Wategos sits above the beach, offering one of the most beautiful dining settings in Australia.

The Pass

The Pass is a favourite among surfers, with a consistent right-hand break that works in most conditions. It's also a beautiful spot for swimming and snorkelling, with clear water and abundant marine life. The beach is located between Main Beach and Wategos, and is within easy walking distance of the town centre.

Clarkes Beach

Clarkes Beach is a sheltered, family-friendly beach located at the eastern end of Main Beach. The gentle waves make it perfect for swimming and learning to surf, and the grassy foreshore is a lovely spot for a picnic. Beach Byron Bay, one of the town's best restaurants, sits right on the foreshore, offering beachfront dining with views across the bay.

Belongil Beach

Belongil Beach is the quieter, more relaxed neighbour of Main Beach. Located to the north of the town centre, it offers a long stretch of sand that's perfect for long walks, beach fishing and escaping the crowds. The beach is also dog-friendly, making it a favourite among locals with four-legged friends.

Tallow Beach

Tallow Beach is a long, open beach that stretches south from the Cape Byron headland. It's less sheltered than the main beaches, making it popular with experienced surfers and those seeking a quieter spot. The beach is backed by national park, giving it a wild, natural feel.

Little Wategos

Little Wategos is a small, secluded beach at the base of the Cape Byron headland. It's only accessible via the walking track, making it one of the most peaceful spots in Byron Bay. The beach is not patrolled, so swim with caution, but it's a beautiful spot for sunbathing, reading and enjoying the view.

Beach Safety

Always swim between the flags at patrolled beaches, and be aware of rips and currents. Byron Bay's beaches are generally safe, but conditions can change quickly. Check the surf report before heading out, and always follow the advice of lifeguards.

Planning Your Beach Day

Byron Bay's beaches are at their best in the morning, when the wind is calm and the water is clear. Start early, bring plenty of water and sunscreen, and consider packing a picnic. After a day at the beach, return to Hotel Marvell for a shower, a cocktail at Horizon Rooftop Bar and dinner at Byron Bay Oyster Bar — the perfect way to round off a day in the sun.
